Wakefield's Homes

Wakefield grew as a market and cloth town on the River Calder, and later on coal. Within two miles of Crofton alone there were three collieries, Nostell, Walton and Sharlston, and mining carried on there until the 1980s. In the early 1900s Lord St Oswald built houses at New Crofton for the Nostell miners. They were pulled down in the 1980s after subsidence damage and the pit closures, and a new estate went up on the land. Crofton has had new housing built in every decade since the 1950s and is now mostly a commuter village.

Ossett's story is cloth. The town made shoddy and mungo, wool recycled from rags and old clothes, and had more than forty mills in the 1850s. The mill owners grew wealthy and built detached Victorian villas in the town.

So a week in Wakefield for us can take in a Victorian house in Ossett, a post-war semi near the city, and a 1970s or 1980s detached house on one of the Crofton estates. Each has a different heating story, and very often it starts with the original system still in place.

Tank-fed systems

A lot of houses built from the 1950s to the 1980s, here and across Yorkshire, went in with a tank-fed system: a heat-only boiler, a copper hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard, and cold water tanks in the loft. Many still have one. It works, but the shower is only as strong as the drop from the loft tank allows, the cylinder takes time to heat back up, and the tanks and cylinder take up space.

Changing to a combi removes all three, as our Crofton job below shows. It is not right for every house. Where two showers are often used at once, a system boiler with an unvented cylinder usually does a better job. A combi heats water straight from the mains, so how well it performs depends on the supply into the house, and that is one of the things a quote visit is for.

A Combi Upgrade in Crofton

In August 2025 we upgraded the heating in a detached house in Crofton, the village about four miles south east of Wakefield city centre. It had a tank-fed system, with a heat-only boiler in the garage and a copper cylinder in the airing cupboard, and the customer wanted to change to a combi.

We took out the old boiler and the cylinder and fitted an Ideal Vogue Max 32kW combi in the garage, where the old boiler had been. Because we are Ideal Max Accredited installers, it carries a 12-year warranty. The airing cupboard was being knocked through as part of the customer's own building work, so rather than just cutting the old cylinder pipework back inside the cupboard, we rerouted it under the floor and out of the way.

The result is more efficient heating, hot water on demand, and strong showers without any extra pumps, because the hot and cold water now both come at mains pressure.

Replacing a combi with another combi? Price it online in a few minutes. A change from a tank-fed system to a combi needs a quote visit first, which you can ask for on the same page. See boiler installation for the boilers we fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wakefield on your standard rate or Band A?

Every Wakefield postcode from WF1 to WF5 is Band A: the same work, with 10% added for travel. That covers the city, Sandal, Outwood, Stanley, Crofton, Horbury and Ossett. A boiler service is £132 including VAT. Hemsworth, South Kirkby and South Elmsall (WF9) are on our standard rate.

Can I swap my tank and cylinder system for a combi?

Usually, yes, if the house has one main bathroom and a good mains supply. The loft tanks and the cylinder come out, and hot water comes straight from the mains at mains pressure. Where two showers are often used at once, a system boiler with an unvented cylinder is usually the better choice. We look at this at a quote visit.

Can a combi boiler go in a garage?

Yes. On our Crofton job the new combi went in the garage, where the old boiler had been. In an unheated garage the pipework, and especially the condensate pipe that carries water from the boiler to a drain, needs protecting from frost, so we plan its route at the quote visit.

Why do your Ideal boilers come with a longer warranty?

We are Ideal Max Accredited installers, so an Ideal Vogue Max we fit carries a 12-year warranty and an Ideal Logic Max a 10-year warranty. We register the boiler with Ideal for you, and the warranty depends on it being serviced every year.

Do you cover Ossett and Horbury?

Yes. Ossett and Gawthorpe (WF5) and Horbury, Netherton, Middlestown and Crigglestone (WF4) are all Band A: the same work, with 10% added for travel. A boiler service there is £132 including VAT, and a heat pump service is £264.
