Pontefract's Homes

Pontefract is an old market town that grew up below its castle, the ruin where Richard II died in 1400. After the castle was pulled down in the Civil War, liquorice became the town's new trade. It peaked in the 1930s, when Pontefract cakes were shipped worldwide, and Pontefract cakes are still made in the town today.

Coal came later and lasted until 2002, when the Prince of Wales Colliery, the last pit in Pontefract, closed. Its site is now a large housing estate named after the colliery. The rest of the Five Towns share much of that coal history.

That gives us a real mix of houses to work in, from older homes near the town centre to brand-new builds. In the older ones, the boiler is often wherever the first one was put, sometimes decades ago, and that spot doesn't always suit a new one.

Where a new boiler can go

A boiler's flue has to let the fumes out safely, at set distances from windows, doors and the property boundary. So a spot that suited an old boiler doesn't always work for a new one, especially in terraces and semis where the house next door is close.

Cellars are common in older houses across West Yorkshire, and they help. Pipes for heating, water and gas can run along a cellar ceiling to almost anywhere in the house, which makes moving a boiler far easier than it sounds. Our Pontefract job below is a good example.

Moving a Boiler in Pontefract

In January 2020 the old heat-only boiler in a Pontefract customer's cellar finally failed. Rather than replace it like for like, they wanted to upgrade to a combi. The catch was the flue: a new boiler in the cellar would have put the flue out over the boundary on next door's side, which isn't allowed.

So we moved it. The new boiler went in the downstairs bathroom on the opposite side of the house, and because the house has a cellar, the heating, water and gas pipes all ran through it to the new spot, which made the move easy. We fitted an Ideal Vogue Max 32kW combi with a 12-year warranty and took the old gravity-fed hot water cylinder out of the loft.

We have serviced it every year since. And as the customers have decorated the house room by room, we have swapped the old standard radiators for column radiators, one room at a time.

Moving a boiler, or changing from a tank-fed system to a combi, needs a quote visit first, which you can ask for on our boiler quote page. Replacing like for like can be priced there online in a few minutes. See boiler installation and radiator replacements for more.

What We Do in Pontefract

All prices include VAT and are our Band A prices, which cover Pontefract and the Five Towns.

  • Boiler servicing — the yearly check that keeps your boiler safe, efficient and inside its warranty. £132, or £192 with an unvented cylinder done at the same visit.
  • Boiler repairs — fault finding and repair. £132 covering the first hour, then 15-minute steps, with parts quoted before we fit them.
  • New boilers — Worcester Bosch and Ideal, supplied and fitted from £2,200. Moving the boiler or changing to a combi? We quote after a visit.
  • Radiator replacements — one radiator or a whole house, including column radiators, sized for the room.
  • Air source heat pumps — designed around a room-by-room heat loss survey. Grant-funded installs go through Heat Geek. Currently grants of £7,500 are available, taken off the price rather than claimed back.
  • Heat pump servicing — £264, with the hot water cylinder included. Repairs are £264 for the first hour.
  • Air conditioning — mini split and multi split systems by UberCool, installed, serviced and repaired. They heat as well as cool.
  • Landlord gas safety certificates — £132 for the CP12, emailed to you once the check is done.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you cover Castleford, Knottingley and the rest of the Five Towns?

Yes. Pontefract (WF8), Castleford (WF10), Knottingley (WF11), Featherstone (WF7) and Normanton (WF6) are all Band A: the same work as our standard rate, with 10% added for travel. A boiler service there is £132 including VAT.

Why can't my new boiler go where the old one was?

Usually because of the flue. It has to let the fumes out at set distances from windows, doors and the property boundary, and the spot that suited an old boiler doesn't always meet them for a new one. On our Pontefract job a new boiler in the old cellar spot would have put the flue out over the neighbour's side of the boundary, so we moved it. A quote visit checks this before you commit.

Can you move my boiler to another room?

Yes. How easy it is depends on the route for the pipes and the flue. In a house with a cellar it is often straightforward, because the heating, water and gas pipes can run through the cellar to the new spot. Moving a boiler is priced after a quote visit rather than online.

Can I change my radiators one room at a time?

Yes. Each radiator can be changed on its own, so many customers do it as they decorate. On our Pontefract job we have swapped the old standard radiators for column radiators room by room over several years, each one sized for its room.

I'm in Hemsworth or South Elmsall. Is that Band A too?

No. Hemsworth, South Elmsall, South Kirkby, Upton and Fitzwilliam (WF9) are on our standard rate, so a boiler service there is £114 including VAT. Pontefract and the rest of the Five Towns are Band A, at £132.
