Homes in the Holme Valley
Holmfirth grew with the cloth trade and the stone quarries around it, and the town is still mostly stone-built cottages on the eastern slopes of the Pennines. Plenty of people know it from Last of the Summer Wine, filmed here from 1973 to 2010. Denby Dale, eight miles north west of Barnsley, grew up around its mills and the Penistone railway line, and is famous for its giant pies: the first in 1788, the most recent a 12-tonne pie for the millennium.
Heating these homes is a mix of old and new. Older stone houses lose heat differently from modern ones, which is why every heat pump we design starts with a room-by-room heat loss survey. And some newer homes in the area were built with a heat pump and underfloor heating from day one, like our Denby Dale job below.
When a heat pump system is over-complicated
A heat pump works best when the water can flow freely and the system is kept simple. Extra tanks, extra pumps and mixing sets each add another place for heat and flow to be lost. When a system has been over-designed, the heat pump has to work harder for less heat, the house never quite warms up, and the running costs climb. The fix is often to take things out rather than add more.
Fixing a Heat Pump in Denby Dale
In July 2025 we were called to a new build in Denby Dale, only five or six years old. The owners had moved in about six months earlier. The house had underfloor heating throughout, run from an air source heat pump, with hot water from an unvented cylinder. Their first winter there, it was not warm enough and the heat pump was not running efficiently.
When we looked, the original installers had massively over-complicated a poorly designed system. The underfloor heating also needed flushing: sealed, low-temperature systems like this can build up a slimy biofilm from bacteria in the water.
We took out the volumiser, the secondary pump, and the pump and mixing sets on the underfloor heating manifolds, making the system completely open, so the heat pump's own pump moves the water straight round every circuit. Then we flushed the whole system and dosed it with a biocide when we refilled it. The water now circulates freely through the heat pump and the floors, the heat gets where it should, and there are no losses through a volumiser.
When we checked back in April 2026, the heat pump's efficiency (its SCOP) had gone from 2 to 3.9, and the house was far more comfortable than the winter before. That means the same heat now takes roughly half the electricity.
If your heat pump is not keeping up, book a heat pump fault finding visit or an annual heat pump service.
What We Do in Holmfirth and Denby Dale
All prices include VAT and are our Band A prices, which cover every HD8 and HD9 postcode.
- Heat pump fault finding and repair — £264 covering the first hour, then 15-minute steps, with parts quoted before we fit them.
- Heat pump servicing — £264, with the hot water cylinder included. Or spread it with our Heat Pump Service Plan, from £26.40 a month over twelve monthly payments.
- Heat loss survey and system design — £138, a room-by-room survey of how much heat your home needs, so a heat pump is sized properly.
- Air source heat pumps — grant-funded installs go through Heat Geek. Currently grants of £7,500 are available, taken off the price rather than claimed back.
- Boiler servicing — £132, or £192 with an unvented cylinder done at the same visit.
- Boiler repairs — £132 covering the first hour, then 15-minute steps.
- New boilers — Worcester Bosch and Ideal, supplied and fitted from £2,200. Replacing like for like? Price it online.
- Air conditioning — mini split and multi split systems by UberCool, installed, serviced and repaired. They heat as well as cool.
What our customers say
Heat pump service
Chris was delayed by a previous job but did let me know he would be late. He was courteous and efficient bringing everything he needed. The job was done quickly and he even fixed the loft ladder which I was unable to use.

Frequently Asked Questions
My new-build heat pump doesn't keep the house warm. Can it be fixed?
Often, yes. When a heat pump struggles in a fairly new house, the cause is usually how the system was designed and set up rather than the heat pump itself. On our Denby Dale job we simplified an over-complicated system and flushed it, and the house was far more comfortable the following winter. A heat pump fault finding visit is £264 including VAT in HD8 and HD9.
What is a volumiser, and does my heat pump need one?
A volumiser is an extra tank of water that some installers add so the system holds enough water for the heat pump to run properly. Where the system already holds enough, it is just one more thing to lose heat through. On our Denby Dale job, taking it out, along with an unneeded secondary pump, let the water flow straight through the heat pump and the floors.
Why does underfloor heating need flushing?
Sealed, low-temperature systems like underfloor heating can build up a slimy biofilm from bacteria in the water. It slows the flow and stops heat getting into the floor properly. Flushing clears it, and dosing the system with a biocide when it is refilled helps keep it clean.
What does SCOP mean on a heat pump?
SCOP stands for seasonal coefficient of performance: how much heat a heat pump gives out over a year for each unit of electricity it uses. A SCOP of 2 means two units of heat for every unit of electricity, and 3.9 means nearly four. On our Denby Dale job it went from 2 to 3.9, so the same heat now takes roughly half the electricity.
Do you cover Holmfirth, Denby Dale and the villages around them?
Yes. Holmfirth, Honley, Netherthong, New Mill and the rest of HD9, and Denby Dale, Skelmanthorpe, Scissett, Clayton West, Shepley and Kirkburton in HD8, are all Band A: the same work, with 10% added for travel. A boiler service there is £132 including VAT and a heat pump service is £264.
