System Flushing Disclaimer

What a central heating flush can and cannot do, why leaks occasionally show up on badly corroded systems, and exactly what the quoted price covers.

System flushing — what it can and can't do

System flushing is the quickest and most effective way to clean a heating system, with minimal disruption and dismantling. We use purpose-built equipment — power flushing pumps, mains flushing units and MagnaCleanse — connected to your system temporarily. High water velocity and pressure, combined with instantaneous flow reversal, dislodges the sludge, corrosion deposits and scale found in most ageing systems.

It works. But there are a few things you should know before we start, and they apply to every flush we carry out.

A flush cleans a system. It doesn't redesign one.

Flushing is highly effective on systems suffering from corrosion. It cannot fix a design fault. If your system has one, we strongly recommend putting that right before flushing — otherwise the same problem returns.

How well a flush works depends on how much corrosion has already happened. The process cures most circulation problems, but it cannot undo the decay that created the need for a flush in the first place.

Leaks are rare, but possible

We cannot inspect a system internally beforehand, and effective cleaning requires a flushing and dispersing chemical. Occasionally that reveals a leak.

Where this happens, the system was already at an advanced stage of corrosion and the leak would have appeared imminently regardless. We would rather it happened while we are stood there with the tools to deal with it, than over a weekend or while the house is empty.

Badly neglected systems may not fully recover

Systems left untreated for years, or never dosed with an effective corrosion inhibitor, can have severely compacted debris in the pipework, radiators or boiler. After a flush:

  • some radiators may still not heat fully
  • a boiler already on the margin of failure may stop working later, if debris breaks loose and collects in the heat exchanger

What the price covers

The quoted price covers the flush only. All our flush prices are "from" prices covering up to ten radiators; additional radiators are quoted separately.

If any of the above arises, or another problem comes to light during or after the flush, any additional work is charged separately. We will always tell you what is needed and what it costs before carrying it out.

The three flushes and what each one does are set out on our central heating services page.
