Air Conditioning for a Family Home in Abbeydale
The south west of Sheffield, from Nether Edge and Abbeydale out to Dore and Totley, has plenty of big Victorian and Edwardian houses. Down by the River Sheaf, the Abbeydale scythe works, now the Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet museum, made scythes until 1933.
In July 2026 a family in Abbeydale asked us about air conditioning for their large detached house, built around 1900. Two people in the house were struggling with the heat. The customer's wife was going through the menopause, often felt hot and was finding it hard to sleep. Their daughter, who lived with them, was heavily pregnant and due within a couple of weeks, and the heat was getting to her too. With more heatwaves forecast, the family also wanted to be able to keep the house at a comfortable, steady temperature for the new baby once it arrived.
We fitted a multi split system on the side of the house, with one outdoor unit feeding two indoor units: one in the living room and one in the main bedroom. At the back of the house, a separate mini split feeds an indoor unit in the large back bedroom, where the daughter was staying and which would become the baby's room. Each indoor unit has its own controls, so every room can be set to the temperature that suits the person in it.
Keeping Cool Is About More Than Comfort
Air conditioning is often seen as a luxury for a few hot weeks a year. For some people it is much more than that, and Sheffield is getting hotter: in June 2026 the Weston Park weather station, with records going back to 1882, logged the city's hottest June day, 32.1°C, and its warmest June night, 20.2°C (The Star).
During the menopause
The NHS describes hot flushes as your face, neck and chest suddenly feeling very hot or cold, by day or at night as night sweats, and says menopause symptoms usually last 7 to 9 years, sometimes longer (NHS: symptoms of menopause). Among the things it suggests is keeping your bedroom cool at night (NHS: things you can do). Air conditioning doesn't treat the menopause, and it is no substitute for talking to your GP, but a bedroom you can keep cool, at the temperature that suits you, can make those nights a lot easier.
During pregnancy
The NHS and the UK Health Security Agency both list pregnant women among the people most at risk in hot weather (NHS: heatwave advice; UKHSA: Beat the heat). A 2020 review of research from around the world, published in the BMJ, found that the odds of a premature birth were about 16% higher during heatwaves (Chersich and others, BMJ 2020). UKHSA's advice is to move to a cooler part of the house, especially for sleeping. Air conditioning means there is always a cool room to go to.
For newborn babies
Babies are less able to control their own temperature than adults (UKHSA). The NHS and The Lullaby Trust recommend keeping a sleeping baby's room at about 16 to 20°C, because overheating increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS (NHS: reduce the risk of SIDS; The Lullaby Trust: room temperature). In a heatwave that can be hard to manage with open windows and a fan. Air conditioning lets you hold a nursery at a steady temperature, day and night. It isn't a replacement for safer sleep advice: keep following it, use a room thermometer, and don't point the air flow straight at the cot.
And not just in summer
Mini split and multi split units are air-to-air heat pumps, so the same unit that cools a room in summer can heat it in winter. In cooling mode it also takes moisture out of the air, which is why a hot, sticky night feels fresher.
Installing air conditioning starts with a free quote visit: we look at the rooms, where the outdoor unit can go and how the pipes will run, then quote you. More about air conditioning installation.

Can air conditioning help with menopause hot flushes and night sweats?
It can make them easier to live with. Among the things the NHS suggests for hot flushes and night sweats is keeping your bedroom cool at night, and air conditioning lets you set the bedroom to the temperature that suits you and hold it all night, even in a heatwave. It doesn't treat the menopause itself, so it is worth talking to your GP about your symptoms as well.
Is hot weather a risk in pregnancy?
The NHS and the UK Health Security Agency both list pregnant women among the people most at risk in hot weather. A 2020 review of research from around the world, published in the BMJ, found the odds of a premature birth were about 16% higher during heatwaves. If you are pregnant and struggling with the heat, talk to your midwife, and keep at least one room in the house cool to rest and sleep in.
What temperature should a baby's room be?
The NHS and The Lullaby Trust recommend about 16 to 20°C for a sleeping baby, because overheating increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Air conditioning can hold a nursery in that range through a heatwave. Keep following safer sleep advice, check your baby isn't too hot by feeling their chest or the back of their neck, and don't point the air flow straight at the cot.
Is air conditioning only useful in summer?
No. Mini split and multi split units are air-to-air heat pumps, so the same unit that cools a room in summer can heat it in winter. In cooling mode it also takes moisture out of the air, which is why a hot, sticky night feels fresher.
